Chapter 8
We talked long into the night, even dozing off and on as our brains slowed down and each problem took longer and longer to ruminate over. What we were planning had never been done before in the realm of white magic. There could be casualties and no one was immune – least of all me.
Not for the first time in my life, I was planning on committing a crime. Only this time I wasn’t doing it out of youthful stupidity and belligerence. There would be no ridiculous car thefts. No illegal substances were clouding my judgment. Nuh, uh, sista – this time I was committing a crime to stop further crimes from being committed against me and those I had grown to love and admire.
It was nearly dawn when I finally shooed them both out of my apartment. We all needed our sleep and now that I knew what had to be done, I needed my loved ones to be as far away from the center of the action as possible. They had their missions and I had mine. Everything could be coordinated from afar from here on out.
And coordination was key to the success of our plan. Oh, and maybe a whole lot of mad magical mojo and major acting ability – which wasn’t my forte, seeing as for a rebel I was incredibly bad at lying. It was going to be hard enough to pretend everything was normal for an entire day… the rest was bordering on miracle territory. Nightmares invaded what little bit of sleep I got, and I awoke feeling defeated before the battle had begun.
Instead of giving in to my weaker emotions, I spent the better half of the morning meditating to find my center of power. Since Remington had been dispatched with Clara and Liza hours before, I was truly alone for the first time since arriving in Mystic. I knew it was for the best, but I missed my familiar in a way I hadn’t anticipated.
I missed Dominic, too. But I was grateful the Fates had intervened when they had, as I knew he would have never left my side if he’d been aware of what I was intending. I could only hope for an outcome that would allow me to see his face once again. Even if our lives ended up on separate paths, the chance to tell him how much his love and support had meant to me was yet one more incentive to win this dangerous game I’d been drawn into.
I trusted Clara’s instincts, but the yapping troll inside my head yearned to have his say. What if we were wrong? What if we were right, but I wasn’t strong enough to fulfill my destiny? What if this wasn’t my destiny? What if my spells backfired and I wound up a drooling vegetable?
Oh, I prayed to the Goddess not to let that last thought become a reality.
No. I was a strong, capable witch… and people liked me, dammit! I
